Grandchildren Droppings
There are press-on stickers on the couch.
There are jars of shells next to the television.
There are jars filled with dirt and unhatched moths on the kitchen counter.
The teddy bears are not where they belong.
There are large cardboard boxes taped together by the back door.
The homemade racecar with CDs for tires sits next to a bowl of fruit.
A cardboard tube from a paper towel roll, once a megaphone, now hides under a bookshelf.
Most of the things the grandchildren played with when they visited this summer have been put back in the guest room where they stay.
But, occasionally, something missed presents itself.
Something made has not yet found a home.
Twilight Zone
When one of my children was young, he went off to summer camp for a week.
I felt like I’d been transported to a Twilight Zone episode.
Everything was where I left it while he was gone.
Nothing was missing from drawers or shelves.
If I wanted tape and scissors, I simply went to the cabinet where they were kept.
What a strange way to live.
I remembered living that way before I had children.
Joy Transformed
But, children make you forget that simple life.
They replace predictability with wild imagination.
They replace order with joy.
They replace your heart with a love you didn’t even know existed.
And, so do grandchildren.
How did your life change when you had children?
How has your life changed with grandchildren?
To you and the unexpected changes in your life joy brings.
