Every now and then you run into a tool that delights you every time you use it.

The Gam Manufacturing combination hammer and screwdriver set is such a tool. Click hereto see the entire hammer and tool set.

My mother had one when I was growing up, and I got one early in my marriage.

Since I inherited my mother’s, I now have two.

My husband remembers the one his grandmother always had in her kitchen drawer.

They last forever.

Balance and Size

The delight comes from two factors:

1. They are perfectly balanced, so feel good in your hands

2. They are exactly the right size for small jobs around the house.

Because they are much smaller than a regular hammer, they fit easily in a kitchen drawer. I keep mine in a small fishing tackle box that slips into a drawer, along with pliers.

How to Hang a Picture

To hang a picture, follow these seven simple steps:

1. Hold the picture on the wall where you want it to hang

2. Put a small pencil mark at the top of the picture

3. Measure the distance between the top of hanger wire and the  top of the picture frame

4. Put a small pencil mark on the wall below the first one the distance measured between the top of the hanger wire and the top of the frame.

5. Position the tack or  nail  at the second, lower pencil mark.

6. Hammer the tack or nail into the wall.

7. Hang the picture from the wire over the tack or nail.

They use a regular size hammer in the video, but hanging pictures is much easier with the Gam combination hammer.

Besides hanging pictures, it is perfect for:

  • hanging curtain rods
  • pounding tacks or small nails into balsa wood or dowels for toy cars
  • teaching children how to pound in nails.

Hidden Screwdriver Set

The second part of this combination tool is the screwdriver set that is in the handle.

When you unscrew the handle, you reveal either a straight slot or Phillips head screwdriver. Then, another one. Then, another one.

Like nesting Russian dolls, the different size screwdrivers are nested in the handle.

I just bought matching his and hers screwdrivers for a wedding present for a nephew and his bride. No kitchen or toolbox should be without one.

Happy Memories

Every time I use mine, I think of my mother and what she tried to do to prepare me to live life on my own.

Thanks, Mom, for teaching me how to use a hammer.
