GPS. Vacuum Cleaners. Tire Pumps. How Many Cigarette Lighters Do You Have in Your Car?

Car cigar lighter

I have never smoked. I was too cheap. I just couldn’t get the image of rolling up a dollar bill and setting a match to it out of my mind.

But, my seven-year-old  car has two cigarette lighters in it.

Of course, they’re not working cigarette lighters. That costs extra.

They are outlets for chargers that have been adapted to cigarette lighters.

And, it’s not enough. My husband and I compete over charging our cell phones and connecting the GPS.

Where Did They Come From?

Cigar lighters were introduced to cars as standard equipment with the 1925-1926 models.

The modern coil lighter was developed in 1956.

Newer cars, like the Subaru 2010 Outback, offer outlets in the trunk, to power tire pumps and vacuum cleaners, as well as in the back seat for passengers’ cell phones.

Blu-tooth and WiFi are options

I doubt if the cigar smokers of the 1920s ever envisioned the car as a mobile power plant.

How many cigarette lighters did you have in your first car?

How many are in your current car?

Which tools do you have that can use the cigarette lighter for power?

To you and keeping your grandchildren’s mobile devices charged up.
