Chair

What magic tricks did you learn as a child?

I read somewhere once, long ago, that you could keep someone from standing up with one finger.

The setup:

  • Have someone sit in a chair.
  • The chair should have a bar underneath it to prevent their feet from going under the chair.
  • They are not allowed to use their hands or arms to help them stand up.

The trick:

If someone is sitting in a chair and you put your forefinger lightly on their forehead, so they cannot lean forward, they will not be able to stand up

The reason:

Normally, when you sit up, you lean forward and slide your feet under you.

This changes your center of gravity, allowing you to stand up easily.

If someone prevents you from leaning forward, it is very difficult to stand up.

The Anti-Gravity Funnels

There is another way to show what a difference the center of gravity makes.

If you tape two same-sized funnels together, wide sides facing each other, then angle two yardsticks in a “V”, with the ends resting on books of different heights, the funnels will roll uphill between the two yardsticks.

The center of gravity of the bulb in the middle of the taped-together funnels changes the direction you would expect the funnels to roll.
