What Does a Llama Have to Do with Pajamas?
As I pretty much only give books as gifts and have many nieces and nephews and cousins once or twice removed, I’ve been able to indulge my secret pleasure of wandering through bookstores.
A friend in college once stopped me on the way back from a shopping trip and peeked in my bags to see what I’d bought.
“Did you buy anything for yourself?” he asked.
Reluctant to admit it, but confronted, I answered, “Yes, I bought a book that is not a textbook.”
“Good,” he said. “My mother told me to always get something just for myself or eventually you would start to resent the fact that you were always getting only what you needed or things for other people.”
Wise woman.
I bought this book for my grandchildren when they come visit after buying one as a Christmas gift for a first cousin, twice removed, (a cousin’s grandchild) but mostly because I was enchanted at the whimsical play with language.
I hope you enjoy the two poems I’ve picked.
Birthdays
If birthdays happened once a week
Instead of once a year
Think of all the gifts you’d get
And all the songs you’d hear
And think how quickly you’d grow up;
Wouldn’t it feel queer
If birthdays happened once a week
Instead of once a year?
My Sister Saw a Dinosaur
My sister saw a dinosaur.
At least she said she saw one.
I said that dinosaurs are dead.
She said she saw it in her head.
A dinosaur inside your head?
“Remarkable!” my mother said.
