A girl’s best accessory is her hair. Whether you have extra long locks or a short sassy ‘do,’ it’s safe to say that the tousled Cali-cool style is most desired.
Lee Rittiner, stylist at the upscale Serge Normant at John Frieda Salon in Los Angeles, offers tips for achieving the oh-so-casual look minus the fuss in less than 30 minutes.
“Everyone wants to master beach hair but thinks it’s more complicated than it actually is,” says Lee.
“The less you do, the better the results. It’s that simple.” With a twist here and a tuck there, Lee offers easy steps to beach-head.
For starters: Shampoo and condition hair normally and towel dry thoroughly. Follow up with what Lee calls his ultimate secret – the Serge Normant Meta Luxe Volumizer. “Unfortunately most women make the mistake of using sea salt spray or dry shampoos to achieve grit. But those products rid your hair of much needed fluff,” explains Lee.
“I swear by Serge’s Meta Volumizer. It takes your hair over the top by controlling frizz and adding volume and texture.” Lee suggests you unload the product on the body of the hair. Let it sit for five minutes until hair is 75 percent dry. Then add more.
In the meantime: Split hair in four sections, pulling away from the direction of your face. Grab the first section and tie a tight ponytail or loose braid, two on the side and two in the back. Repeat with the remaining sections, twist and pin the hair into chignons.
Blow-dry the ponytail/braid to remove all the moisture. “When your hair is hot, it’s like wax. It molds no matter what the texture of your hair. You can do whatever you want,” adds Lee. Grab breakfast or coffee and let set for 15 minutes.
Wrap it up: Finish by using a diffuser, focused on the wounded sections, to fully dry the hair. Wait five additional minutes then remove the ponytail or braid and let your hair down.
Run your fingers through for sexy mermaid waves. For a night out on the town, take a few pieces of hair and wrap around a curling iron. Make sure to leave the ends out for a “done-without-looking-done” finish.
Easy Breezy: For even softer waves, split hair in just two sections instead of four (think Princess Leah). Twist in a sweet honey-bun, dry, unwind and let loose.
