The traditional cookies were invented accidentally by Ruth Wakefield in 1934. Ms. Wakefield owned the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts and served these gems to her customers. It is reported that Ms. Wakefield had run out of her baking chocolate and substituted a chocolate bar that was given to her by Andrew Nestle. (Sound familiar?) It is a year filled with new promises, dreams and the next phase in food trends! We are seeing different foods from other cultures popping up all over. One of the top food critics predicted that this year’s favorite cuisine would be Austrian. Another reported that Indian food was it!! The new dessert trend is the old fashioned comfort dishes like brown bettys, buckles, cobblers and crisps. These are the recipes our Nana passed down to us and we have been making for years. If we have to ‘Fall’ backwards……let’s do it with this dish! These luxurious apples are a wonderful example of what Fall has to offer. The aromatic flavors along with the warmth this season brings reminds us that family and good friends should always be cherished. Baked Apples with Vanilla Bean Custard Creme   4-6 large golden delicious apples (or any apple of preference) 2 tablespoons butter, for baking dish 1/4 – 1/2  cup sherry 1/4 -1/2 cup sugar   Preheat oven 350F. Valentines Day is celebrated all over the as a holiday for lovers. There are several stories about how Valentines Day came to be. One legend states that during the 3rd century in Rome, the emperor needed vast armies of men, and too many were getting married. Single men made the best soldiers. He eventually banned marriage which prevented the men from dodging the draft. A priest named Valentinus started to perform marriages secretly.  He was caught, thrown in jail and executed on February 14. Just before his death, it is written that he’d fallen in love with the jailer’s daughter.
