10.  The dollar store is your friend.  Exhibit A: a wreath from a high end store is about $40 but a wreath with supplies bought from the dollar store is about $4.  Your local dollar store has more than just canned veggies and birthday cards.  They are stocked full of pre-made decorations and crafty kits.

9.  You are invited to a dessert hour.  You don’t always have to go for the large dinner with 10 homemade items that leaves you tired and your wallet stretched.  How about a dessert party or a “Holiday Open House?”  This way, you can serve desserts that can be made ahead of time.

It’s time for you to do a little homework. So, what’s in your closet? Chic Mom sent Lucid Salon (www.lucidsalon.com) owner Paula Ivins Kinston, who Allure named Best of NYC to Big Apple runway shows to see what’s “in” this season. We’ve created a Top 10 list from her report.

10 – Structure. Fitted jackets with padded shoulders. Skinny jeans. Big belts.

9 – Contradiction. Mix things up a bit with contrasting patterns and textures. Pair men’s trousers with a glittery top. Coordinate silk with wool or cashmere and velvet. Wear The Little Black Dress detailed with studs.

8 – 40s and 80s styles worn with a 21st century attitude. Motorcycle-inspired jackets trimmed with fur or feathers. Animal prints in wild colors like purple and teal.

7 – Jewelry’s big, but a lot is not. Choose a single, chunky necklace and a big bangle for your wrist.

6 – Fabulous footwear. Jeweled flats, platform pumps, over-the-knee boots. Knock ‘em dead with the shoes.

5 – Deceptively simple 40s hair. Slick in the front with a tease pony tail in the back or use a curling iron for all over wave then brush it through for a newer look.

4 – Defined brows. Ditch the pencil, use powder instead.

3 – Smoldering eyes. Eyeliner’s “out”, eye shadow is “in”. Gray is HUGE. Yes, Yes, Yes to metallic undertones.

2 – Red is hot. Pink blush placed high on the cheek bones for that flushed look. Wear gloss over red lipstick for voluptuous looking lips.

1 – Keep it simple. Make a statement.
